FAMILY HOME GRONINGEN

Living with Nature

CLIENT: Private
LOCATION: Groningen, The Netherlands
DATE: 2025-2026
SCOPE: Interior Design, Renovation

A renovation of a three-storey 1930s house in the north of the Netherlands into a home where nature and living intertwine. Designed for a young couple who cherish outdoor life, every detail reflects their story, allowing the essence of the natural world to permeate the interiors through materials, colours, and light.

Inspired by the concept of an interior garden, the home brings nature indoors through biophilic design, earthy textures, soft greens, and natural tones, while warm, filtered light nurtures a sense of calm and wellbeing. In the living area, a fully openable façade dissolves the boundary between inside and outside, letting the house breathe with the garden and flow with the day’s natural rhythms. The entire ground-floor living area can open fully to create a continuous connection with the outdoors, or close into smaller, more intimate spaces that adapt to the dynamics and needs of everyday life.

Spaces unfold fluidly, each with its own character yet connected to the whole. Sunlit bedrooms invite rest, bathrooms are crafted for reflection and wellbeing, and flexible rooms evolve with the family’s changing needs. From layout to finishes, intimacy and openness coexist, creating a home that restores, energizes, and grows with its inhabitants.

Guided by four elemental principles, Nature, Earth, Light, and Wood, the design expresses harmony through a thoughtful palette of textures, materials, and tones. The result is a house in constant dialogue with its surroundings: a warm, welcoming, and adaptable space that tells the story of those who live within it.

The project involves a complete renovation of a three-storey interior and a horizontal extension toward the garden. Great attention was given to developing the new layout in parallel with the extension, ensuring that the addition was fully shaped by the needs and flow of the interior spaces.
